Abrasion

Abrasion is caused by the process of wearing down or rubbing away. This may be due to contact between components or the result of environmental factors.

For components exposed to abrasion in service, protection can be maintained by use of a surface treatment which will either prevent this wear or provide sacrificial protection, such as a coating, which will abrade in place of the substrate surface.
