Corrosion

Corrosion, caused by a chemical reaction occurring on the exposed surface of a metal due to exposure to substances such as air, water and salt, causes the surface to deteriorate. An estimate on the financial implication of corrosion puts the estimated loss at approximately $500 billion in the US alone.

However, substrate corrosion may be effectively controlled using a variety of surface treatments, thereby delivering a significant reduction in component damage and downtime.

For example, thermal spray and ceramic coatings may be applied to provide a barrier which protects the metal from corrosion; Bodycote’s ceramics will provide in excess of 9,000hrs in salt fog test and are inert to most acids.
